| Burnhead Bed & Breakfast | Distance from Bellingham: 12.63 Miles |
| Category: | Accommodation & Holiday Lets |
| Burnhead bed and breakfast is situated on Hadrian's Wall walk in the heart of the beautiful Northumberland National Park. Both the wall walk and the pennine way pass the front door. The house is built with stone from ‘the wall’ and lies on the site of ‘the wall’. So why stay near the wall when you can stay on it. The original Burnhead Cottage was built as the manager’s house of the nearby Cawfields Quarry in 1830. The quarry became defunct many years ago and the site has been beautifully restored showing a slice through the volcanic rock strata called the "Whin Sill" upon which much of the wall is built. Cawfields is a site of major interest on the Hadrian’s Wall Path with Milecastle 42 easily visible. It is also the site of a Roman water mill. The views back east along the wall are classic and feature in many travel companions describing the wall. Burnhead is situated centrally in the UK, indeed the local town of Haltwhistle claims to be the centre of Britain. This means that Burnhead is ideally placed to act as a centre for visiting many areas in northern Britain. One hour in the car will take you to the English Lakes, North Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders. You can discover the delights of the Northumbrian countryside, its fascinating history and visit its glorious beaches and coastline. Although Burnhead stands in glorious isolation it is quite close to some very useful amenities. The Military Road and the A69 run east to west to join the A1 and M6. Two miles south Haltwhistle has a good bus service and has a station on the Newcastle to Carlisle rail line linking the main east and west coast lines to London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. A local bus services the Hadrian Wall route. Haltwhistle is a neat, small town with a good range of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants with a tourist information centre, bike hire facilities, and horse riding opportunities. The Milecastle Inn pub, only 10 minutes walk from Burnhead and our nearest neighbours, serves excellent food. The wonderful aspect of Burnhead is that so many walks start from its door. You can explore Hadrian’s Wall or head north or south and explore one of the numerous alternative routes. Cycle routes are equally good. However you fill your day, energetically or relaxing, you can be assured of a warm, friendly welcome at Burnhead with a comfortable bed and a good breakfast | |

| Fully renovated 5 star graded, this 17th Century grain store in the oldest part of Seahouses, where the old smokeries and herring yards once stood. With sea views from the entrance, stunning interior design, original features and great location, it makes a perfect coastal hide away. Everything is on the doorstep, with the harbour and the boats to the Farne Islands, within a minutes walk. We took on Fisherman's Retreat as a derelict property and spent 5 months fully renovating and converting it into something almost unrecognisable! It was one of the most challenging projects we'd taken on - everything had to be done to this property and we needed to come up with some imaginative ideas to make the most of the space and to bring natural light into a building that had hardly seen any for decades! We managed to maintain the integrity of the building, preserving all the original features, changing layouts, installing a state of the art heating system, double glazing and adding some stylish contemporary finishes. It now has a neutral and calm interior design style with some jaunty nautical touches using seagrass wallpaper, coir matting, stripy fabrics and some reclaimed sailing artefacts. It has lots of light and has been finished to high standards throughout. We sold the finished house to Tracy and Steve, our friends from Newcastle in the summer of 2004 and have been filling it ever since with guests from all over the world. Everyone seems to love this quirky character cottage and many of our guests come back for a second and third time! | |

| The Plaice | Distance from Bellingham: 38.28 Miles |
| Category: | Accommodation & Holiday Lets |
| The Plaice occupies arguably the most enviable location in Seahouses. With two en-suite bedrooms and further double bedroom (which is a small double), all sumptuously furnished and one with its own balcony, its first floor living accommodation looks directly over the bustling harbour and the sea beyond. This architect designed reworking of a traditional fisherman’s cottage uses glass and chrome to give light and airy modern styling to this prime holiday property. The open plan kitchen/living/dining area opens out on to a glass balcony from where you can watch the fishermen bring in their catches. All this is just a stone’s throw from the centre of the village and all the facilities it offers. The Plaice has just received a commendation for a Design Award organised and judged by the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty!! These are some of their comments........ `This is a wonderful example of how to sensitively redevelop a terraced house within a conservation area. The result is a building which fits perfectly with its surroundings and sets a standard for others to follow. It is especially pleasing to see the use of good quality traditional materials and simple contemporary design. This must be a great place to stay. Subject to the agreement of interested parties this project would make a good case study for the Northumberland Coast ANOB Design Guide' The Plaice has received a 5 star grade by VisitBritain 2008. The Plaice can comfortably sleep up to 5 guests but we feel the living space is more suited to groups of 4. | |

| Budle Bay Penthouse | Distance from Bellingham: 38.33 Miles |
| Category: | Accommodation & Holiday Lets |
| A most unusual and spectacular space for holidays, the penthouse forms part of the top floor of the recently converted historic Maltings mill at Waren Mill, just a few minutes drive north of Bamburgh. The mill is said to date back to Norman times and has an idyllic location on the banks of Budle Bay. It affords stunning uninterrupted views over the Bay towards Holy Island and lies in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This area is renowned for its bird life (binoculars and telescope provided!) Budle Bay, part of the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve, is an estuary for two streams, the Waren and the Low. The vast mud plains left behind when the tide is out are a haven for birdlife. Greylag, pink-footed geese, mallard, wigeon and others, migrate here in late summer from the Arctic and use Budle Bay as a shelter in winter months. In true Penthouse style, there is a large open plan living/dining/kitchen space and has a fresh boutique feel to the interior design scheme. If you're looking for something a bit different in a perfect coastal location, then look no further. It's not the usual cosy country cottage...it's much better! | |
